Info Design: What Is Info Design

Info Design: What Is Info Design:

Mod 1:  Let's Examine Information Design

Think clean, concise and creative and you have a basic foundation for Information Design.

Information Design is a specialty that utilizes art, text and information in careful combination. The goal is to supply a main idea in such a manner that it is user friendly.  This art is often used for advertising, signage, health and safety, and instructional information. It can take on different mediums from a street sign to a computer web page.

A spectrum of  disciplines utilize information design. The goal is to take information and weed out the unimportant in order to focus on the main idea. The results often are not only useful but attractive to the eye.

Mod 2:  Let's Examine Human - Centered Design

This theory of design was created by Mike Cooley.

    The aspects that I appreciate:

This theory encourages creativity and imagination.

                              A multi-disciplinary approach.

Allows for more than one way to achieve the goal.

Builds on what we already know.

                                                           Encourages taking responsibility.

The aspect that gives me pause:

                           Rejects scientific models.

The way I would use this in a blog by using an unusual approach to a topic or lesson. By adding some"personality" to an otherwise serious lesson, we can grab the interest of the learner making an impression that will make the lesson more memorable.

I would like to implement this by giving examples of respiratory  care procedures that are clinically accurate but add present a human approach.

  1. Great concept on ID: "Information Design is a specialty that utilizes art, text and information in careful combination" - which is so true! Information Design has been around for quite some time and I don't consider it to be "new" like some of the theories that we've read about.

  2. What I like the most about Cooley is his approach to technological development. The current direction for hi-tech advancement is to render systems active and human beings passive. Cooley takes a different approach and states that though the use of modern software and hardware tools, it is possible to design technology that reverses this evolution. He aims to accomplish this through the use of effective information design. I am keen on this theory.

  3. I love the colors of your blog and the font color and size made everything easy to read. However I found the direction of the wording to be a little confusing. It looked like the sentence was being finished but the ending of it was on another line. I do like how Cooley focuses on imagination and being creative. After that's how great ideas are made and you can have fun when working with something!

  4. I also could relate best to Cooley's design strategy. A systems ability to be easily understandable, responsive, inviting and easily manipulated and transformed to best meet the users needs is paramount.
I understand that you were trying to differentiate your blog from others with the odd word wrapping but I think you fell short on your goal. It does stand out but is not clearly understandable.

  5. Hi Janice,

Very nice blog and good post about theory. I do agree with you that scientific explanations removes the sort of personality we sometimes look for in the information we receive. I like to think that there should be a balance between technical information and more personable information.
